Wiggle Into a Book Wednesdays

We are so excited to work with Harlem Heights Community Charter School to introduce our reading program "Wiggle Into a Book Wednesdays". We will be at the school each Wednesday afternoon reading to different elementary school classes from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. At the end of the reading time, each child will also select a book to take home to help establish their at home library. For many of these children, these will be the very first books that they have in their home. Harlem Heights has twice as many children living in poverty as the rest of the county. Programs like these are critical to ensure the success of the kids.

Why Read Aloud?

According to research conducted by Dominic Massaro, a professor emeritus in psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, reading to children is more effective than talking to children in terms of building vocabulary. "Reading aloud is the best way to help children develop word mastery and grammatical understanding, which form the basis for learning how to read", said Massaro. He found that picture books are three times as likely as parent-child conversations to include a word that isn’t among the 5,000 most common English words.
